Wellington Landing is preparing for a school wide literacy event from January 23 – 27, 2012. One of the highlights of the event is a visit from David Pollay, author of The Law of the Garbage Truck, on Thursday, January 26, 2012, who will speak at each of the morning assemblies.  His message is anti-bullying, and the students have already been introduced to his book in their social studies classes.

Thursday’s theme SUPER STAR DAY focuses on the idea that Students and Teachers Are Responsible, Respectful and Resilient. Everyone on campus will be engaged in activities that promote literacy and the theme.  Students will be given a STAR during the first hour class which will contain a hand-written note about why the teacher believes the student is a STAR.  During activity time, the students will write ways that they can demonstrate being responsible, respectful and resilient.

Students will attend grade level assemblies throughout the morning showcasing the talents the performing groups as they demonstrate what it means to be a STAR at Wellington Landings.  Step Team, Cheerleaders, Majorettes, Word Warriors (Rap Group), Sign Language, Handbells, Drama Club (skit), Dance Team, and Band have been preparing for this event.

Additionally, on Thursday the judging of the door decorating contest will take place.  The décor will represent the theme “Take the Lead and Read.”  Prizes will be awarded for the best door on each grade level.

On Friday, students and staff members will be dressed as their favorite character from a book or will design and wear a t-shirt representing it.

Members of the media are welcomed to attend.
